Things to do (beyond the parks)

We love the parks. We also love a vacation that doesn't blow the budget on day three. These are the alternatives we've genuinely sent friends to.

The major parks

Disney, Universal, SeaWorld. Buy tickets ahead of time and shop around — authorized resellers often come in below gate price, and the gap varies by date.

Walt Disney World

14 min by car $$$$

The big one — four parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom) plus two water parks. We're 4.7 miles to Magic Kingdom; you'll be there in under 15 minutes most mornings. Buy direct from Disney for guaranteed authenticity, or shop around authorized resellers — prices vary, and a few consistently beat the gate.

Universal Orlando (incl. Epic Universe)

26 min by car $$$$

Three parks now that Epic Universe is open (Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon). Worth a multi-day visit on its own. Compare authorized resellers before buying — multi-day pricing varies week to week.

SeaWorld Orlando

22 min by car $$$

Marine animals, big-name coasters, lower crowds than Disney or Universal on most days. Combo tickets with Aquatica are worth the math if you want a waterpark day.

Budget alternatives

When you don't want to drop another $800 on a day for the family, this is the playbook. Fun Spot is the headliner — fifteen minutes from us.

Fun Spot America (Kissimmee)

15 min by car $$

The smartest answer to 'we can't do another $200/person park day.' Family-friendly thrill park 15 minutes from the house on US-192 — coasters, go-karts, the works. Day pass is around $105 at the gate, but Early Bird, Evening, and Florida-resident pricing can land it at $35–$50. Buy ahead, time it right.

The Orlando Eye at ICON Park

18 min by car $$

A 400-foot observation wheel on International Drive (renamed from 'The Wheel' under Merlin in 2024). The broader ICON Park complex is free to walk around — pay per attraction. A solid half-day on a rainy afternoon.

Old Town Kissimmee

11 min by car $

Free entry, free parking, classic-car cruise nights on Fridays and Saturdays, rides à la carte. Touristy in the good way — the kids love it, you'll spend less than a Disney lunch.

Waterparks

Three options of decreasing distance — Island H2O is the closest, Aquatica is open year-round, Volcano Bay is closed Oct 2026 – Mar 2027.

Island H2O Water Park

8 min by car $$

The closest waterpark to the house — at Sunset Walk next to Margaritaville Resort Orlando in Kissimmee. Locker-friendly, family-scaled, slides for every age. 2026 season runs March 6 through October 31.

Aquatica (SeaWorld)

22 min by car $$$

Open year-round, big-park scale, great combo with a SeaWorld day. Has some of the better slides in Orlando — Dolphin Plunge is the headliner.

Universal Volcano Bay

26 min by car $$$

Volcano Bay is Universal's beautiful Polynesian-themed waterpark, but heads up: it's closed October 26, 2026 through March 24, 2027 for refurbishment. If you're visiting in that window, steer to Island H2O or Aquatica instead.

⚠ Closed Oct 26, 2026 – Mar 24, 2027 for refurbishment.

Mini-golf

Kissimmee has the densest themed-mini-golf cluster in the country. Pick a course by theme — pirates, alligators, volcanoes — and call it an evening.

Pirate's Cove (I-Drive at ICON Park)

18 min by car $$

Themed pirate mini-golf with two 18-hole courses — caves, waterfalls, and a treasure-hunt vibe the kids buy in to fast. Cheaper after dusk and the lighting is nicer.

Congo River Adventure Golf (Kissimmee)

12 min by car $$

Live alligators in the lagoon between holes — feed them for an extra few bucks. Two themed courses, plenty of shade. The Kissimmee location is closer to us than the I-Drive one.

Hawaiian Rumble Adventure Golf

20 min by car $$

Volcano-centerpiece course with a working 'eruption' on the hour. Less crowded than the I-Drive options and the holes are cleverer than the theme suggests.

18-hole golf

Indian Ridge Oaks sits in the heart of Kissimmee's golf belt. ChampionsGate and Reunion are the splurges; Falcon's Fire is the everyday value.

ChampionsGate Country Club

12 min by car $$$

Greg Norman-designed 36 holes — National and International courses, both highly ranked. Public-access despite the country-club name. Under 15 minutes from us.

Reunion Resort (Watson, Palmer, Nicklaus)

14 min by car $$$$

The only place in the world with three signature courses by Watson, Palmer, and Nicklaus side by side. Resort-fee day passes are how non-guests get on. Worth a splurge round.

Falcon's Fire Golf Club (Kissimmee)

8 min by car $$$

Rees Jones-designed public course right off US-192. Better value than the resort courses, well-maintained, friendly to mid-handicappers. The closest 'real' 18-hole to us.

Mike Dasher-designed public course tucked just south of us in Davenport. Quiet, scenic, often the best tee-time availability in the area on short notice.
